Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana released the following statement today following the Orange County Legislature’s 11 to 10 vote on the resolution that would have provided the necessary funding to begin the process of building a new Orange County Government Center.
“I am deeply disappointed by the outcome of today’s vote. It’s regrettable that a minority of the legislature prevented the majority from moving this important project forward. I commend those legislators who had the vision to vote in favor of progress for the benefit of our County and the people we serve.
My commitment is, and always has been, to doing what’s right for the taxpayers of Orange County. I believe that we did our due diligence to study all aspects of this critical issue and presented a plan that made sense for the residents who use government services and the employees who provide them. It is unfortunate that some legislators do not recognize the many benefits that would come from building a new government center – benefits that include time and energy efficiencies, improved effectiveness, accessibility, security, and most of all economic revitalization for our community and jobs for Orange County residents.
The employees and our residents, especially those in our County seat, the Village of Goshen, need to see a return to normalcy and know that we are moving ahead in a positive fashion. Regardless of this vote, we will continue to provide the government services our citizens have come to expect and deserve from our County workforce.
